Following your appointment you will be charged a fee for the service provided.

Adelaide Oncology & Haematology are a private practice committed to providing high level care and support to our patients through our team of highly experienced practitioners

How our Doctors’ fees are set:

The Australian Government sets a fee for every medical service in the Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS). A ‘gap’ occurs when your specialist charges more than the Government MBS fee.

If your doctor charges a ‘gap’, you are required to pay the difference between the MBS fee and the total charges set by your doctor. This cost is often referred to as an ‘out-of-pocket’ cost.

We request that the full fee is paid on the day (the MBS fee + gap) as Medicare will quickly reimburse the patient the difference into their allocated bank account – usually on the same day. We submit this claim to Medicare on the day on your behalf.

If you have not provided Medicare with your bank details, you will need to contact Medicare to set up this service.

In Australia, doctors are permitted to decide how much they charge for their services.

Fee’s may vary between doctors due to differences in specialty and costs in delivering particular services, but all fee’s reflect a reasonable return for the doctors time, expertise, and skills. As well as this, fees go into the cost of running our specialist medical practice, this includes but is not limited to: staff wages; practice nurse who provides same day support, treatments, and education; rent; and medical and IT equipment.

Informed Financial Consent:

You have the right to ask for an estimate of the charge for your appointment, and can do this by contacting our reception team. New patients are always emailed the fee sheet of the doctor they are seeing, so as to be informed financially prior to attending appointments.

If you have spoken to our Bookings Coordinator to confirm the date of your first appointment and have not received an email, please check your junk mail folder, or contact our reception team to resend.

Hospital Private Health Insurance:

Your hospital private health insurance will only cover your treatment, such as chemotherapy, and often your pre-treatment consultation with your doctor. The amount and services covered by your private health will vary with different funds and level of cover. It is best to speak directly to your private health provider to confirm if they will cover your treatment appointments.

In all other instances, attending appointments for consultation with your doctor will result in an out of pocket fee.

Please speak to our experienced reception staff on 8463 2500 if you have any further questions.
